“The Rings of Power” Season 2 Draws 40 Million Viewers in 11 Days, Amazon Reports

Amazon has announced that the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has attracted a global audience of 40 million viewers within just 11 days of the first four episodes becoming available. While this figure seems impressive, there is some ambiguity surrounding how Amazon calculates viewership. It’s unclear whether the 40 million represents viewers who watched a full episode or those who only watched part of one.

Despite this, Amazon has been consistent in releasing viewership statistics for its popular shows. For example, the first season of “The Rings of Power” managed to reach 25 million viewers within its first day of release in 2022. Based on the data provided by Luminate, which monitors the performance of television shows, the viewership for the second season is notably lower compared to the first, especially in terms of the initial surge in interest.

It’s worth noting that “The Rings of Power” is not Amazon’s only show to garner significant viewership in a short amount of time. Earlier this year, “Fallout” accumulated 65 million viewers over 16 days. Although this was a slightly longer period than the 11 days measured for “The Rings of Power,” it suggests that “Fallout” would have likely surpassed 40 million viewers in the same timeframe. Similarly, the fourth season of “The Boys” brought in 55 million viewers over a span of 39 days, though the extended release period makes direct comparisons with “The Rings of Power” difficult.

According to Amazon, the second season of “The Rings of Power” now ranks among its top five most-watched television series of all time. The show is behind “Fallout” and the second season of “Reacher” in terms of overall viewership. This also means that “The Terminal List,” a popular series from 2022, has now dropped to sixth place on Amazon’s list of top-performing series.

In addition to this, Amazon claims that “tens of millions” of people have continued to watch the first season of “The Rings of Power” since early August. The studio proudly notes that the show has maintained its position as Prime Video’s number one title ever since the second season premiered on August 29. While much of the focus is on its U.S. audience, Amazon highlights that a significant portion of viewership comes from international audiences, although they have not shared specific numbers to back up this claim.

This global success positions “The Rings of Power” as a significant piece of Amazon’s streaming strategy, although the slower start for Season 2 compared to Season 1 suggests that the series may not have retained all of its initial momentum. However, with its massive production budget and high-profile branding, the show remains one of Amazon’s flagship series, expected to continue drawing in audiences from around the world.
