Following the gripping conclusion of its second season, ITV’s intense thriller Trigger Point has left fans eagerly anticipating news of a potential third series. While no official confirmation has been made, producer Jed Mercurio has addressed the possibility, giving viewers hope that the story may not be over just yet.
The series, which stars Vicky McClure as bomb disposal officer Lana Washington, delivered a tense and dramatic finale, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. The final episode saw Lana facing a life-threatening ultimatum, as well as the loss of key characters, leading many to wonder what could come next. Fans have since taken to social media to urge ITV to continue the show.
A Shocking Finale and Room for More
Season two’s conclusion saw Lana kidnapped by the terrorist group responsible for multiple bombings, including the attack that claimed the life of her lover, DCI Thom Youngblood. Forced into a final, devastating mission, Lana was tasked with transporting an explosive device into Counter-Terrorism HQ, where the Home Secretary and other officials were gathered for an emergency meeting.
Under immense pressure, she was told that any attempt to disobey orders would result in the deaths of her parents, who were being held hostage with explosives planted in their home. However, in a last-minute act of defiance, Lana managed to sabotage the terrorists’ plans. By interfering with the original device, she redirected the explosion to the terrorists’ van rather than the intended target.
With the immediate threat neutralised, Lana’s quick thinking and bravery helped to dismantle the group, leading to several arrests and ultimately saving her family. Despite her heroic actions, the emotional and psychological toll on Lana was evident. At a wedding celebration for her colleague Danny, she admitted she was struggling to cope with the traumatic events of the past two series.
Fans Demand a Third Season
Following the finale, social media was flooded with pleas from fans hoping for another season. Viewers expressed their enthusiasm online, with comments such as “We need series 3!” and “Hoping there’s another season soon.” Many have argued that the show’s intense and well-crafted storytelling deserves to continue.
Despite this widespread demand, ITV has yet to make any announcements regarding the future of Trigger Point. However, producer Jed Mercurio acknowledged the possibility of a third season, saying: “I don’t think you can predict whether shows will be long-running. All you can do is put your best effort into each season and hope it resonates with the audience.”
He continued, “If season two is received with the same enthusiasm as the first, it would be fantastic to continue with a third. But at this stage, we’re not planning ahead. Our focus is on making each season a success in its own right.”
Vicky McClure Reflects on Her Role
Lead actress Vicky McClure has spoken openly about the physical and mental demands of working on Trigger Point, revealing how challenging it has been to juggle her roles as both the series’ star and an executive producer.
“It was exhausting,” McClure admitted. “It’s a physically demanding role, but what makes it even tougher is that I’m involved behind the scenes too. Even when I’m not in front of the camera, I’m reviewing footage, giving notes on scripts, and making sure everything runs smoothly. I never wanted to be an executive producer just for the title—I want to be fully involved.”
She also shared how filming impacted her personally: “I turned 40 while we were shooting, which gave me plenty of opportunities to moan about how much running I had to do! The camera picked up everything, so there was no chance of using a stunt double. But I love being part of the production. I’ve always been curious about how things work behind the scenes, and I genuinely feel like a crew member on Trigger Point.”
What’s Next for Trigger Point?
While Trigger Point has yet to be officially renewed, its high-intensity storytelling and loyal fanbase make a third season a strong possibility. With unanswered questions and potential new threats, there’s certainly scope for the drama to continue.
For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement from ITV. Whether or not the show returns, Trigger Point has undoubtedly cemented itself as one of the most gripping thrillers on British television in recent years.
